inquest は古フランス語 enqueste を経てラテン語 inquirere にさかのぼり、in-「中へ」+ quaerere「探す」の組み合わせです。inquire や query も同根で、「中身を詳しく探る」感覚が共通。そこから死因などを調べる審問、つまり検死の意味になりました。
Inquest came into English through Old French enqueste and goes back to Latin inquirere, meaning "to seek into" or "investigate."
