intermedia は現代英語で、ラテン語由来の inter「間に」と media「媒体たち」を組み合わせた語です。media は medium の複数で、もとはラテン語 medius「中ほど」なので、「媒体と媒体のあいだをまたぐもの」から「中間メディア」と納得できます。関連語は intermediate, medium。
Intermedia is a modern English formation built from inter "between" and media, the plural of medium. Medium goes back to Latin medius, meaning "middle." So the word originally suggests something that exists between different media or crosses from one medium to another.
