auk は17世紀に北イングランド方言へ入り、古ノルド語 alka など北欧語から来た鳥名。語源は水鳥の鳴き声まねと考えられ、great auk や学名 Alcidae も同系。名前自体が鳴き声っぽく、ウミガラスを含む北の海の潜水性海鳥らしい感じがそのまま残る。
Auk came into English from northern European bird names, especially Old Norse alka. It is thought to be imitative, based on the sound of the bird's call. The name stayed close to that old seabird sound, and the same family appears in great auk and the scientific name Alcidae.
