auk は17世紀に北イングランド方言へ入り、古ノルド語 alka など北欧語から来た鳥名。語源は水鳥の鳴き声まねと考えられ、great auk や学名 Alcidae も同系。名前自体が鳴き声っぽく、ウミガラスを含む北の海の潜水性海鳥らしい感じがそのまま残る。
