Memory Tip
a tern dived into the sea、terns flying above the beach
Picture a tern flying over the coast on narrow wings, showing its forked tail before diving for a fish. Compared with a gull, it is generally slimmer and has sharper-looking wings. The Arctic tern provides a memorable example because it is known for traveling very long distances.

Etymology
The bird's name comes from Old Norse "þerna" and entered English from a Scandinavian seabird name.
