Stenosis is a medical condition in which a passage in the body becomes narrower than normal. It is commonly used for blood vessels, heart valves, or parts of the spine, and this narrowing can cause health problems.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
医療英語では語尾の -osis が「異常な状態・病変」を表すことが多く、stenosis もまず“病名らしい形”として覚えると定着しやすいです。意味の核は「通り道が狭くなって流れにくいこと」。aortic stenosis, carotid stenosis, spinal stenosis のように、血管・弁・脊柱管など“流れや通過”に関わる名詞とよく結びつきます。完全にふさがる occlusion ではなく、「細くなって通りにくい」段階を指す、と対比で押さえると混同しにくいです。
The ending `-osis` often appears in medical words for an abnormal condition, so `stenosis` already looks like a disease term.
