litmus はオランダ語 lakmoes からで、lak「赤い染料ラック」+ moes「どろっとした混合物」に分けられます。lacquer や shellac も lak と同系で、もとは色材の名だったから、色変化を見る試験紙の名として腑に落ちます。
Litmus comes from Dutch lakmoes, made from lak, a red dye resin, and moes, meaning a soft mixture or mash. The lak part is related to words like lacquer and shellac, which also refer to resin-based coloring materials. Because the substance was first known as a colored dye material, the name later became attached to the paper used to show color change in acid and base tests.
