confound はラテン語 con-「共に」+ fundere「注ぐ」が語源で、もとは「一緒に流し込んで混ぜる」感覚でした。fuse や foundry も同根で、区別が溶けてごちゃまぜになるから「混乱させる」になるわけです。
Confound comes from Latin con- "together" and fundere "to pour." Its earliest sense was like "pour together" or "mix into one mass." Because things mixed together become hard to separate, the word later developed the meaning "to confuse" or "to bewilder." Words such as fuse come from the same root idea.
