confounding はラテン語 confundere にさかのぼり、con-「共に」+ fundere「注ぐ」で「一緒に注ぎ込む」が原義。区別がつかないほど混ざることから「混乱させる」となり、confuse や fuse と並べると意味の芯が見える。
Confounding comes from Latin confundere, made from con- meaning together and fundere meaning pour. The original image is of things being poured together and mixed so fully that they cannot be separated. From that, the word developed the sense of confusing or baffling.
