puffin は中英語 puffoun にさかのぼり、コーンウォール周辺のケルト系語から入った語と考えられます。ブルトン語系の「頬・ふくらみ」を表す語、ひいてはラテン語 bucca「ほお」と結びつけられ、ふくらんだ顔つきや嘴の印象から鳥名になったと考えると覚えやすいです。関連語は buccal, embouchure。
Puffin comes from Middle English puffoun and is thought to come from a Celtic source from the Cornwall area. It may be linked to words for the cheek or a swollen face, and so perhaps to Latin bucca "cheek," which also appears in buccal. The bird name was likely shaped by the bird's rounded face or bill.
