procrastinate はラテン語 procrastinare に由来し、pro-「先へ」+ crastinus「明日の」から成る語です。procrastination が同根で、仕事を前へ進めるのでなく「明日の側へ押しやる」と考えると、先延ばしの感覚が語形にそのまま出ています。
Procrastinate comes from Latin procrastinare, from pro- "forward" and crastinus "of tomorrow." The literal idea is to push something ahead to the next day. That sense developed naturally into delaying action instead of doing it now. The noun procrastination comes from the same root.
