bream は古フランス語 breme を経て、さらにフランク語系のゲルマン語にさかのぼる魚名です。語源の核は「きらめく」に通じるとされ、銀色に光る魚体がそのまま名になった感覚です。オランダ語 brasem やドイツ語 Brasse も同根です。
Bream came into English through Old French breme and goes back to a Germanic fish name. The older root is often linked with the idea of shining or glittering, probably from the fish's bright body. So the name may originally have referred to its appearance rather than its kind alone. Related words survive in Dutch brasem and German Brasse.
