中英語 hap（運、偶然）＋ -en（動詞化）＋ -ing で「偶然に起こること」が原義。hap は古ノルド語 happ（幸運）に由来する。同根語に happy（幸運な→幸せな）、perhaps（ひょっとすると）がある。
Happening is formed from happen plus the suffix -ing. Happen developed in Middle English from hap, meaning “chance, fortune, or an occurrence,” together with a verb-forming ending.
