noun

こっている

解説 Definition

happening は happen(起こる)の現在分詞・動名詞です。「起こっていること」「起こっている」という意味で、今進行中の出来事を表します。What is happening? のように、状況をたずねる時にもよく使います。

Happening refers to an event or situation that is taking place, especially one unfolding at the present time. As the -ing form of happen, it also appears after be in progressive expressions such as “Something is happening.”

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 happen「起こる」に -ing を付けた形で、語末の n は重ねず happening と書き、発音は /ˈhæpənɪŋ/ です。「現在起きていること」を指し、What is happening? は状況を尋ねる定番表現です。名詞的には「出来事」、進行形では is happening の形で「起こっている」と整理しましょう。

Connect happening directly to the verb happen, “to take place.” Add -ing without doubling the final n: happen becomes happening, pronounced with three syllables. The key image is an event unfolding now rather than a planned action performed by a person. Learn the common question What is happening?, which asks about the present situation, and the pattern something is happening. Depending on its grammatical position, happening can name an occurrence or serve as the -ing form in a progressive verb phrase such as is happening.

例文

Something is happening outside.

What is happening in the room?

A meeting is happening now.

今、会議が行われています。

happening の語源・成り立ち Etymology

中英語 hap(運、偶然)+ -en(動詞化)+ -ing で「偶然に起こること」が原義。hap は古ノルド語 happ(幸運)に由来する。同根語に happy(幸運な→幸せな)、perhaps(ひょっとすると)がある。

Happening is formed from happen plus the suffix -ing. Happen developed in Middle English from hap, meaning “chance, fortune, or an occurrence,” together with a verb-forming ending. Hap came from Old Norse happ, “good luck.” The earlier association with chance explains the idea of an event coming about. Words historically connected through hap include happy and perhaps, although their modern meanings have developed in different directions.
