Internationalism is the belief that countries should cooperate closely and think about shared global interests. It is often used in politics, economics, and peace movements to describe support for international cooperation instead of strong nationalism.

まず international が見えれば「国際的な」、-ism が付けば「思想・主義」と読めるので、international + ism で「国際主義」と組み立てて覚える。対比すると定着しやすく、nationalism は自国中心、internationalism は国どうしの協調重視。国連、外交、貿易、平和運動の文脈で出やすく、international cooperation や mutual understanding と結び付けると意味がぶれにくい。globalism ほど“地球全体の一体化”までは寄らず、“国家間の連帯”に重心がある点も区別ポイント。

internationalism の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 inter-「〜の間」と natio「生まれ・民族」に由来する nation に、-al と -ism が重なった語。国と国の「あいだ」を越えて結びつこうとする発想が、そのまま国際主義の意味になった。nation や multinational も同じ語根。
Internationalism comes from international plus -ism. It is based on Latin inter, meaning "between," and natio, meaning "birth, people, nation," which also gave English nation. The sense grew from what exists between nations to the idea of cooperation or connection across national borders.
