Isocyanate was formed in modern chemistry from `iso-`, from Greek `isos` meaning "equal" or "same," and `cyan-`, from Greek `kyanos`, meaning "dark blue." The `cyan-` part came through cyanide, named after Prussian blue pigment. In isocyanate, `iso-` shows the chemists' idea of a compound with the same composition as cyanate but a different structure; related English words include `cyan` and `cyanide`.
