Etymology
Kapa is a Hawaiian word for traditional bark cloth. It is related to Proto-Polynesian tapa, a term associated with a beaten or prepared surface and widely used for bark cloth in the Pacific. Hawaiian regularly changed an earlier Polynesian t sound to k, helping explain the correspondence between tapa and kapa. Other Pacific traditions use different established names, including Samoan siapo and Tongan ngatu, for related forms of bark cloth.
