古ノルド語 kappe や中低ドイツ語 kappe（帽子・覆い）に由来し、ゲルマン語圏で「頭を覆うもの→容器」へ意味が転じた。英語の cap（帽子）と同根。ノルウェー語では kapp は「岬・先端」の意味もあり、地名にも多く使われる。
