結婚することを約束されている状態を表す形容詞。婚約している人に対して用い、その相手を指すこともある。婚約者としての意味を含みつつ、婚約の状態を強調する語として理解するのが自然だ。
If someone is betrothed, they are formally engaged to be married. This word is more formal and old-fashioned than engaged, and it often appears in historical, literary, or ceremonial contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず日常語の engaged（婚約している）を土台に置くと覚えやすい。betrothed はその改まった・物語的な言い方で、「結婚を約束された状態」を強く感じる語。形は be + -ed で受け身っぽく、be betrothed to ... の形で「〜と婚約している」と出やすい。married のように既婚ではなく、まだ結婚前。文脈によっては my betrothed のように「婚約者」そのものも指すので、状態中心の形容詞だが名詞っぽくも使える、とセットで覚えると混同しにくい。
Although it ends in `-ed`, `betrothed` can be used like a noun: `her betrothed`, `my betrothed`. It sounds formal, literary, and old-fashioned compared with `fiance`. Remember the contrast: `betrothed` is before marriage, while `spouse` is after marriage.

betrothedはbe-（強意）+ troth（誓い・真実）で、trothは古英語treowth、さらに「忠実さ」を表す語にさかのぼります。もとは「固く真実を誓われた人」で、婚約が恋愛感情より公の誓約だったことが見えます。trueやtruthも同じ根です。
