解説 Definition
engaged は engage(従事させる、関わらせる)から来た語で、ここでは「従事している、関わっている」という意味です。be engaged in の形で、仕事や活動に取り組んでいることを表すのによく使います。
Taking part in, occupied with, or actively committed to a particular activity, task, or kind of work. In this sense, it is commonly used after be and before in, as in “be engaged in research.”
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
engaged は engage に -ed を付けた過去分詞で、語末の e を残して d を加え、-ed は有声音の後なので /d/ と発音する。be engaged in work・research・a project の形を一まとまりで覚え、「時間や力をその活動にしっかり向けている」と捉える。
Connect engaged directly with the base verb engage. It is the past-participle form, made by adding -d because engage already ends in silent e; the ending is pronounced /d/. For this meaning, learn the complete pattern be engaged in, followed by an activity: engaged in work, research, negotiations, or a project. Picture a person whose attention and effort are committed to something. This helps distinguish the construction from engaged to, which usually describes an agreement to marry, and from an engaged phone line in British English.

engaged の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 engagier(en-「中に」+ gage「誓約・担保」)が語源。「担保を差し入れる→誓約する→関わる」と意味が拡大。関連語:gage(担保)、mortgage(抵当=mort「死」+gage)。何かに自分を「質入れ」するイメージで従事・婚約の意味に。
Engaged is the past participle of engage. Engage entered English through French, ultimately from a formation containing en-, “in,” and gage, “a pledge or security.” The underlying image was that of placing something under a pledge or obligation. Its meanings later broadened to include committing oneself, involving another person, and occupying attention, which led naturally to be engaged in for active involvement in work or another activity.
