中世フランス語 engager に由来し、en-「中へ」+ gage「担保・誓約」から成ります。もとは「質に入れる・約束で縛る」で、そこから仕事や人間関係に「身を入れる」つまり「関与する」へ広がりました。
Engage comes from Old French engager. It was built from en-, meaning put into, and gage, meaning a pledge or security. It first meant to bind by a promise or pledge, and later developed into taking part in something or becoming involved with a person, task, or activity. The idea moved from being tied by a promise to being actively committed.
