誰かの注意や興味を完全に奪うことを表す動詞で、本を読んだり議論したりするときによく用いられる。話題が非常に面白くて周囲の状況を忘れてしまう状態を描写するときに使う。
To engross someone means to hold all of their attention and interest. It is often used for activities, stories, or subjects that make a person deeply focused.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
engross は「be engrossed in 〜」を丸ごと覚えるのが近道。読書・映画・会話・作業に深く入り込み、周囲が見えなくなるほど注意を奪われる場面で使う。interested よりかなり強く、absorbed に近い。book, conversation, work など具体的な語と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。engaging は「興味深い」、engrossing は「夢中にさせる」で、実際によそ見できない状態まで入るのが engrossed。人を主語にした受け身表現が特によく出る点もセットで押さえるとよい。
The fastest way is to learn the chunk `be engrossed in`. Use it for moments when a book, film, or task pulls all your attention in. It is much stronger than just `interested` and close to `absorbed`.

古フランス語 en gros（大量に）に由来し、元は文書を大きな字で正式に書き写す意味だった。そこから「全面的に占める→心を完全に占有する＝夢中にさせる」へ意味が変化。関連語: gross（総体の）、engrossing（夢中にさせる）。
Engross comes from Old French en gros, literally meaning "in bulk" or "in large form." It first referred to writing out a legal document fully and formally, often in large script. From the idea of taking up the whole document, it later came to mean occupying all of someone's attention.
