entertain の語源・成り立ち Etymology
entertain は古フランス語 entretenir、ラテン語 inter（間に）+ tenere（保つ）にさかのぼります。もともとは「関係を保つ・もてなす」で、そこから相手の気分をつなぎ留めて楽しませる意味へ。tenant や maintain も同じ tenere 系で、「保つ」が芯です。
Entertain comes through Old French entretenir, from Latin roots meaning "hold among" or "keep up." At first it was about maintaining relations, receiving guests, or keeping something going. From there it developed into the modern sense of keeping a person's mind or attention pleasantly engaged; maintain and tenant are related through the same Latin tenere, "to hold."
