前に述べた文書・場所・事柄の中にあること、またはそこに含まれる内容を指す副詞。法律文書や契約書、説明文などの硬い文章でよく使われ、「その中に」「そこに」「その点において」のような意味を簡潔に表す。日常会話ではあまり使われない。

there + in と見て、「そこに」ではなく「その中に」と機械的に取ると覚えやすい語です。日常会話ではあまり出ず、契約書・規約・説明文で『前に出た文書や事項の中に含まれる』内容を指すときに出やすいのが特徴。the terms therein, the information contained therein のように、直前の名詞を受けて『その中の』と処理すると定着します。thereby, thereafter など同系の硬い副詞と並べて覚えると見分けやすいです。
