existence は、まず基礎動詞 exist「存在する」を見抜くと覚えやすいです。-ence は difference, presence などと同じく「状態・性質」を名詞にする語尾なので、「existしている状態」→「存在」。the existence of life / prove its existence の形でよく出ます。presence が「その場にいること・存在感」を帯びやすいのに対し、existence はもっと広く抽象的に「存在そのもの」を指します。nonexistence と対で覚えるのも有効です。

existence の語源・成り立ち Etymology
existence は古フランス語 existence を経て中世ラテン語 existentia に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ sistere「立たせる」から成る。原義は「外へ立ち現れる」で、そこから“実際にそこにあること”という「存在」の意味になった。関連語は exist, consist。
Existence came through French and Medieval Latin from a verb built from ex- "out" and sistere "to cause to stand." The original image was of something standing forth or appearing. From that, the word developed the meaning of actually being real or present; exist and consist are from the same root family.
