Memory Tip
lambaste A for B「Bを理由にAを酷評する」が基本形で、受け身の be lambasted for も頻出します。
Connect the older idea of beating someone with attacking them verbally. Remember lambaste someone for something, which expresses much stronger criticism than criticize alone.

Etymology
The word originally meant to beat severely and appeared in the seventeenth century. It is thought to combine lam and baste, both meaning to strike, although its exact formation is uncertain. It later acquired the figurative meaning of attacking with words.
