覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
acne は、毛穴が詰まったり炎症を起こしたりして、顔・胸・背中などに吹き出物ができる皮膚症状「ニキビ」です。日本語の「アクネ」は洗顔料や治療薬の商品説明でも見かけるので、acne cream「ニキビ用クリーム」と結び付けると覚えやすいでしょう。英語では通常、数えない名詞として have acne、treat acne、make acne worse の形で使い、an acne や acnes とはしません。十代の顔に複数の吹き出物がある場合も、症状全体を一語の acne で表すと押さえましょう。
Connect the word with product labels such as "acne cream." It is normally uncountable, so say "have acne" or "treat acne," not "an acne" or "acnes."

acne の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 akmē(頂点・最盛期)の誤写が定着したとされる。本来は皮膚の隆起を「頂点」に見立てた医学用語。同根語に acme(頂点)がある。つまり肌の表面に「小さな頂」ができる症状という比喩的命名。
The name is said to have arisen from a copying error involving Greek akmē, meaning a point or peak. The English word "acme" comes from that same Greek word.
