皮膚の毛穴に皮脂や汚れがたまって細菌が繁殖することで小さな炎症が起きる状態。主に顔や背中などの露出部にでき、白っぽい膿や赤い腫れとして現れる。痛みやかゆみを伴うこともあり、つぶすと跡が残ることがある。

pimple は古英語 pipel「吹き出物・小さな腫れ」にさかのぼる語で、はっきりした接頭辞より語幹そのものが小さく盛り上がる粒を表した。派生語 pimply も同根で、皮膚にぽつっと出る「小さなふくらみ」という原感覚が、そのままニキビの意味になっている。
