周回した
解説 Definition
lapped は lap の過去形・過去分詞で、コースを周回したこと、または競争相手に一周差をつけて追い越したことを表します。
The past tense and past participle of lap, meaning that someone or something completed one or more circuits of a course, or passed a competitor after gaining a full circuit on them.
使い方 Usage
- lap the track は「トラックを一周する」。lap the course twice のように回数を添えることもできます。 Lap the track means to complete a circuit of the track. Add a number of circuits in expressions such as lap the course twice.
- 目的語が競争相手なら「周回遅れにする」の意味になります。lap a slower car は「遅い車に一周差をつけて追い越す」です。 With a competitor as its object, lap means to pass them after gaining a full circuit, as in lap a slower car.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
lap に -ed を付けるときは、短母音の後の p を重ねて lapped にします。語末の -ed は /t/ と読み、独立した音節にはしません。
Remember lap → lapped: double the final p after the short vowel before adding -ed. The ending sounds like /t/ and adds no extra syllable.
例文
The runner lapped the track in just under a minute.
その走者は1分弱でトラックを一周しました。
By the final stage, the fastest car had lapped several slower cars.
最終段階までに、最速の車は何台かの遅い車を周回遅れにしていました。
She lapped the course twice before the coach called the team together.
コーチがチームを集める前に、彼女はコースを2周しました。

lapped の語源・成り立ち Etymology
lapped の lap は古英語 læppa「垂れた部分・折り返し」に由来し、「重なる」という感覚から一周して元の位置に重なる意味へ広がった。競走では「周回する」「一周差をつける」の意になる。関連語は overlap, lapel。
Lapped is the regular past-tense and past-participle form of lap, with the final p doubled before -ed. Lap is related to Old English læppa, referring to a loose or hanging piece or fold. Its senses involving overlap and wrapping developed into the idea of going around a course until one circuit meets or overlaps its starting point, and hence into the racing sense of gaining a complete circuit on a competitor.
