lecturerは「講義」を意味するlectureに、人を表す-erが付いた語で、もとはラテン語legere「読む、集める」に由来します。「読み上げて伝える人」が原義で、同じ語根からelect「選び出す」やcollect「集める」も生まれ、知識を拾い集める感覚が見えます。
