leetはオンライン俗語で、eliteを短くし、1337と崩して書いた形から広まりました。eliteはフランス語を経てラテン語eligere「選び出す」にさかのぼり、electやselectと同根なので「選ばれし者」の感覚が残っています。
Leet began as internet slang, shortened from elite and often written as 1337 in playful "leet speak." Elite came into English through French and goes back to Latin eligere, meaning "to choose out."
