北極圏やツンドラ地帯に生息するネズミに似た小型のげっ歯類。周期的に個体数が大きく増減し、大移動を行うことで知られる。比喩的には、周囲に流されて盲目的に集団行動する人を指すこともある。
A lemming is a small rodent that lives in cold northern areas such as the Arctic. In informal English, it can also mean a person who follows other people without thinking independently. This second meaning is usually critical.

lemming はノルウェー語 lemming から英語に入り、さらに古ノルド語 lomundr にさかのぼる北方語系の動物名です。語源はサーミ語系 luomek と結びつけられることもあり、英語の近縁語が少ないぶん、北方にすむこの小型げっ歯類の名がほぼそのまま借用された語だと分かります。比喩義は、この動物の集団移動にまつわるイメージから後に広がったものです。
`Lemming` came into English from Norwegian `lemming`, a northern animal name. It is usually linked further to Old Norse `lomundr`, and some scholars also connect it with a Sami word. Because English had no native word for this animal, it mostly borrowed the name directly.
