A secularist is a person who supports keeping religion separate from government, education, or public affairs. The word is often used in discussions about politics, law, and society. It does not simply mean someone who is not religious.

まず core は secular。religious「宗教的な」と対比で覚えると入りやすく、secular school / secular state のように「宗教色を公から外した」文脈でよく出ます。そこに -ist が付くと「その立場をとる人」。つまり secularist は secularism を支持する人です。なお atheist「無神論者」とは別で、神を信じるかではなく、政治・教育・公共空間を宗教から切り分ける立場だと押さえると混同しにくいです。

secularist の語源・成り立ち Etymology
secularist は secular「世俗の」に -ist「主義者・担い手」が付いた語で、secular はラテン語 saeculum「時代・この世」に由来します。secular や secularism と同根で、「永遠や聖域ではなくこの時代・この世界に軸足を置く人」と見ると意味が明確です。
Secularist is built from secular and the suffix -ist. Secular comes from Latin saeculum, meaning an age, generation, or the world of this time, rather than the eternal or sacred world. So a secularist is, in origin, someone whose outlook is centered on worldly life; secular and secularism share the same root.
