wake が「目を覚ます」で、awake や wake up の wake と同じだと押さえると核がぶれません。そこに -ful が付いた wakeful は「眠らず、目がさえている」、さらに -ness で状態名になって wakefulness。「眠れないこと」だけに寄らず、起きていて意識がはっきりしている感じまで含めます。sleepiness の反対側、alertness と近いが、まず『起きている状態そのもの』に軸がある語。daytime wakefulness や promote wakefulness のような形で見ると定着しやすいです。
