siesta はスペイン語で「昼寝」を意味し、ラテン語 sexta hora「第六時」に由来する。sexta は「六番目」で、sex や sextet と同根。夜明けから六番目の時刻、つまり正午ごろの休息が、そのまま昼寝の名になった。
Siesta came into English from Spanish siesta. Spanish got it from Latin sexta hora, meaning "the sixth hour," with sexta meaning "sixth."
