lifter は lift「持ち上げる」に行為者を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた語で、lift は古ノルド語 lypta「持ち上げる」に由来します。lift には16世紀から「こっそり持ち去る、盗む」という俗義があり、そこから lifter は「物を持ち上げてさらう人」つまり泥棒になりました。shoplifter や uplift が近縁です。
"Lifter" comes from "lift" plus the suffix "-er," which often means "a person who does something." "Lift" is from Old Norse "lypta," meaning "to raise."
