lithography
リソグラフィー
解説 Definition
lithography は、石版や金属板を使う印刷技法であるリソグラフィーという意味です。日本語のカタカナ語とほぼ同じですが、英語では技法そのものだけでなく、その技法による制作や印刷分野を広く指します。
Lithography is a printing process in which an image is prepared on a flat stone or metal surface and transferred to another material. The term can also refer broadly to work or production using this process.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
litho-「石」と -graphy「書く・描く技法」に分け、「石に描いて刷る技法」と覚えます。技法・分野は lithography、そこで作られた一枚の版画や印刷行為は lithograph と区別します。study lithography、modern lithography のような組み合わせも有用です。
Break lithography into litho-, “stone,” and -graphy, “writing, drawing, or a method of recording.” The original process involved drawing on a flat stone and printing from that prepared surface, so “drawing on stone” provides an accurate memory link. Use lithography for the technique or field, as in study lithography or modern lithography. A lithograph is usually an individual print produced by the process, while a lithographer is a person who practices it. This distinction keeps the related forms clear.

lithography の語源・成り立ち Etymology
1813年にドイツ語 Lithographie から英語へ入り、さらにギリシャ語 lithos「石」+ graphein「書く・描く」にさかのぼります。もとは石版に描いて刷る技法なので「石に描く印刷」という成り立ちで、関連語に lithograph、graphic があります。
English borrowed lithography in the early nineteenth century from German Lithographie. Its elements ultimately come from Greek lithos, meaning “stone,” and graphein, meaning “to write or draw.” The formation directly reflects the original printing method, in which an image was drawn on a prepared stone surface. Related English formations include lithograph, the name of a print or the corresponding verb, and graphic.
