prophesyはギリシャ語prophetesにさかのぼり、pro-「前で・先に」+ phanai「語る」が核です。prophetやprophecyも同根で、もとは未来を当てるより神意を言葉にして告げることだったので、「予言する」に重みが出ます。
Prophesy goes back through Latin to Greek prophetes, from pro- "before" or "forth" and a verb meaning "to speak." It is related to prophet and prophecy. At first, the idea was not mainly about guessing the future, but about speaking out a divine message, and only later it became closely linked with foretelling.
