recidivism はフランス語 recidivisme を通じて入った語で、さらに後期ラテン語 recidivus「再び落ちる」にさかのぼります。re-「再び」+ cadere「落ちる」からできており、一度立ち直ってもまた落ちる感覚が「再犯」につながり、recidivist や accident も同根です。
