Etymology
Madrid developed from the medieval Arabic place name Majrīṭ, recorded during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. The name is commonly associated with watercourses, channels, or a place rich in water, although its precise formation may also reflect an earlier local element adapted into Arabic. The Arabic name subsequently passed into medieval Spanish and developed into the modern spelling Madrid as the settlement grew into the capital of Spain.
