The English place name Malacca came through European forms of the Malay name Melaka. The name is traditionally associated with the melaka tree, whose name is connected with Sanskrit āmalaka, referring to the Indian gooseberry. Because rattan canes were exported through the port, the geographical name later also became associated in English with “malacca cane,” and eventually with the material or walking stick itself.
