Manhattan は先住民レナペ語系のムンシー語に由来する有力説があり、古形 Manna-hata は manah-「集める」+ -aht「弓」+ -aan「場所」と解されます。つまり「弓材を集める場所」という土地の呼び名が、現在の地名「マンハッタン」になりました。派生語に Manhattanite があります。
Manhattan derives from a name in the Munsee branch of the Lenape language. An early recorded form, Manna-hata, has been analyzed using elements associated with gathering, bows, and place, giving the interpretation “place for gathering bow wood.” Indigenous place names were recorded in varying European spellings, from which the modern form developed.
