Mendacity means dishonesty or lying, especially when it is deliberate or repeated. It is a formal word used in serious writing or discussion rather than everyday conversation. It often refers to false statements, deceptive behavior, or a lack of truthfulness.

まず形で覚える。mendacious（うそをつく、欺く）の名詞形が mendacity で、-ity は「性質・状態」を作る語尾。curious→curiosity と同じで、「mendacious である性質」＝欺瞞。lie が一回の『うそ』なら、mendacity は『うそつき体質・不誠実さ』まで含む、やや硬い語。a politician's mendacity, expose mendacity のように、公人や文章中の不誠実さを強く非難する場面で出やすい。deceit よりも抽象的な性質名として捉えると残りやすい。なお mend（修理する）とは別物なので結びつけない。
The ending `-ity` often makes an abstract noun, so `mendacity` is the quality itself, not one single act. Link it with the adjective `mendacious` if you know it: a `mendacious` person shows `mendacity`. It often appears in serious phrases like `political mendacity`, so think of formal moral criticism, not everyday lying.

mendacity はフランス語 mendacité と後期ラテン語 mendacitas を経て入り、ラテン語 mendax「偽る、うそつき」に由来する。語源の奥には menda「欠点・傷」があり、mendacious や amend と同根なので、「真実に傷をつけてゆがめること」から欺瞞の意味になる。
