meteorology はギリシャ語 meteora「空中にあるもの」+ -logy「学問」から成ります。meteor も同根で、もとは星だけでなく空に現れる現象全般を指しました。だから meteorology は「空中現象を研究する学問」から気象学の意味になります。
Meteorology comes from Greek meteora, meaning "things in the air," plus -logy, "study of." In early use, meteora meant many kinds of things seen in the sky or atmosphere, not only what we now call meteors. From that, meteorology came to mean the study of weather and atmospheric events.
