Climatology is the scientific study of climate and long-term weather patterns. It is used in environmental science, geography, and meteorology to understand how temperature, rain, wind, and other conditions change over time.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
climate（気候）に -ology（〜学）が付いた形だと見ると覚えやすいです。biology, geology と同じ「名詞＋ology＝その分野を研究する学問」の型なので、まず climate を見抜ければ意味がかなり取れます。似た語の meteorology が天気・大気現象寄りなのに対し、climatology は長期的な気候の傾向や変動を扱う学問。weather ではなく climate の世界、と対比すると定着しやすいです。

climatology は climate + -ology で、climate はギリシャ語 klima「傾き・地帯」、-ology は logos「学問」に由来します。もとは土地の傾きで日差しの角度が変わる発想から「気候」へつながり、acclimate や geology を合わせると語の組み立てが見えます。
Climatology is made from climate and -ology, "the study of." Climate comes from Greek klima, meaning "slope" or "region," from the idea that the slope of the earth affected the angle of the sun and so the weather of a place. Over time the word moved from "region defined by inclination" to the modern idea of climate; compare acclimate and geology.
