Etymology
Minuteman is a compound of minute and man. It was applied to specially selected members of colonial American militia units who were expected to respond on very short notice. Minute ultimately comes from Latin minutus, “small,” because a minute is a small division of an hour; man comes from Old English mann. The historical plural is Minutemen, changing man to men within the compound.
