ラテン語 calculare（小石で数える）に「誤って」を表す mis- が付いた語。calculus（小石→計算）が語根で、calculator, calculate と同根。古代ローマでは小石を使って数を扱ったことから「計算」の意味が生まれ、mis- によって「数値を誤って計算すること」、つまり計算違いを表す。
Miscalculations is built from mis-, meaning "wrongly," and calculation. Calculate comes from Latin calculare, based on calculus, meaning "small stone," because stones were once used for counting.
