覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
missile に -s を加えると missiles です。末尾の /l/ は有声音なので、複数形の -s は /z/ と発音します。ミサイルが何発も並ぶ姿と結び付けましょう。
Add -s to missile to form missiles. Since the final /l/ is voiced, the plural ending is pronounced /z/. Picture several missiles together to remember the plural form.

missiles の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 mittere(送る・投げる)の過去分詞 missilis(投げられるもの)が語源。miss-(送る)が語根で、mission(使命=送り出すこと)や emission(放出)と同根。「投げ飛ばすもの」が原義で、現代の飛翔兵器の意味になった。
Missile comes through French and Latin from Latin missile, meaning something capable of being thrown. It is related to mittere, “to send” or “to throw,” whose participial stem also appears in words such as mission and emission. The earlier broad sense referred to a projectile; the modern military sense became associated with a self-propelled weapon directed toward a target. Missiles is the regular English plural formed by adding -s.
