mitochondrial は mitochondrion に形容詞語尾 -al が付いた語で、mitochondrion はギリシャ語 mitos「糸」+ chondrion「小さな粒」からできています。関連語に mitosis, chondrocyte があり、顕微鏡で糸のような粒に見えたことから「ミトコンドリアの」という名になりました。
