multi- は multivitamin, multinational などでもおなじみで「多い」。focal は focus の形容詞で「焦点の」。つまり multifocal は「焦点が一つではない」とそのまま取れる。眼鏡なら bifocal（二焦点）より数が多く、遠近だけでなく複数距離に対応するイメージ。医療では multifocal lens, multifocal cancer のように「病変や補正ポイントが一か所に限られない」ときに使う。focus が複数に散る絵を思い浮かべると忘れにくい。
