focal はラテン語 focus「炉・火の中心」に、形容詞化の接尾辞 -al が付いた語です。家の中心にある炉が「視線や作用が集まる点」へ広がったと考えると、焦点的なの意味が腑に落ちます。focus や refocus も同じ語根です。
Focal comes from Latin focus, which first meant a hearth or fireplace, the central fire in a home. With the adjective ending -al, it became a word for something related to a center or point of concentration. The meaning moved from a physical center of fire to the point where attention or force is gathered; focus and refocus share the same root.
