南米の草原などに生息する大型の飛べない鳥で、英語では rhea の別名として nandu も使われる。ダチョウに似た体つきだが別の種で、長い脚で速く走ることで知られる。やや別名的・文語的な語形として見られることもある。
A nandu is a large South American bird that cannot fly and looks similar to an ostrich or emu. It lives mainly in open grassland areas. This word is mostly used in zoology or when talking about wildlife.

nanduはスペイン語・ポルトガル語nanduを経て、グアラニー語やトゥピ語の鳥名にさかのぼります。接辞分解より土地固有の名がそのまま入った借用語で、スペイン語ñandúやポルトガル語nanduが同系。南米らしい大型鳥を見た人々の呼び名が、そのまま英語名になったわけです。
`Nandu` came into English through Spanish and Portuguese, from an Indigenous South American bird name, probably from Guarani or Tupi. It was borrowed as a whole name rather than built from English parts. The word kept the local name as it moved into European languages and then into English. A closely related form is Spanish `ñandú.`
